I came across a wonderful idea: create an email address for your child(ren) and fill it with messages capturing memories, milestones, and photos- then gift it to them when they’re older and able to truly understand and appreciate it.

I created a Gmail account for my daughter shortly after she was born. My first email to her was an autobiography of myself and our family’s origins. I shared how her father and I met, along with milestone updates and photos. I even had her grandparents write to her with their own autobiographies and special memories. On holidays and special occasions, I would send her a message. This September, she’ll begin Kindergarten, and I plan to write about her first day of school, along with updates since my last message.

Recently, I had my son and created a Gmail account for him as well. I plan to write to him about his crazy birth story and our family history, and, like with my daughter, continue sending emails occasionally throughout the years. When they’re older, somewhere between 16 and 20- I’ll give each of them access to their email accounts.

Tip: Create a professional email address your child(ren) can use for years to come—ideally one that includes just their name. When setting it up, consider using a reputable email provider like Gmail or Outlook.
